Within the suburbs and beyond, there are a number of independent theatres that are making the world a better place. They’re often not as expensive, beautiful, preserved, and host a number of independent films.

The Catlow, the Wilmette Theatre, the Music Box Theatre, and the Logan Theatre rank among the top contenders.

The Catlow, in the heart of downtown Barrington, shows one movie at a time. It’s connected to a sandwich shop, which makes me smile (who doesn’t want an overflowing sandwich while they watch a film?), and the theatre itself is like a walk into 1927.

The Wilmette Theatre boasts extensive charm on the outside. From the inside, it has many of the appearances of a standard theatre, but it’s the movies that makes this one count. The Wilmette Theatre plays good movies. Unexpected movies. Independent movies. All are thought-provoking, and, as an added bonus, the popcorn consumed while watching them tastes especially good.

The Music Box Theatre is an essential Chicago Destination. It plays everything from silent films to Jurassic Park to new independent contenders. The theatre’s history has been preserved, and the people who have preserved it make it one-of-a-kind.

The Logan Theatre parallels the Music Box, though it falls slightly behind in looks. Of course, it makes up for that lost with a slightly busier movie schedule. The ambiance is intriguing and vibrant. And the movies are top-notch.
