While some students tend to change their interests or skillsets as the school year progresses, a few find the resolve to stay committed to a club or sport, and eventually begin to master it. Junior Lavena Mikhail displays this type of dedication.

“My favorite part of the game is when I out-skill someone or get around them,” Mikhail said.  “I’ve been playing soccer for about 6 years. My middle school didn’t have a soccer team, so I played on the park district team.”

Mikhail is number 22 on the girls soccer team, and plays right defense. Her determination to succeed and achieve is what helped her reach where she is today.

One of her main inspirations is her brother, whose example she wishes to follow.

“I wanted to play because my brother played soccer and he was really good, so I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Mikhail said.

Despite the amount of coordination and practice involved, Mikhail and her teammates try find ways to stay competitive while still having fun.

“Something fun we do is before every game, [a fellow player] gives a big pep talk so we get hyped up before playing,” Mikhail said.

Although the team is doing well so far, the season has only begun, and Mikhail believes that there’s always room for improvement.

“We had a really good year last year. This year we’re ok, but we’ve only had three games so far. I think we could definitely work on connecting passes,” Mikhail said.
