Ladies First won best vocals, best choreography, best female soloist, and were grand champions in the unisex division at their last show choir competition in Janesville WI on March 10.

“When I found out we won I was in shock. I think we all were in shock. I asked people behind me like 6 times, ‘wait did we just win?’,” freshman Natalie Wozny said.

The group won first place overall for the first time all season at this competition.

“I was really excited to hear that we won because we had improved in placement at every competition but hadn’t won yet, so I was really happy that we finally did it,” sophomore Hannah Van Meveren said.

After months of practice, this success made group members feel like their hard work had paid off.

“Obviously show choir isn’t all about winning, but we had put so much hard work into our show this year,” junior Annie Slania said. “We definitely performed a really successful show that day, so we were happy to see that our hard work paid off. It was a great end to the season.”

The girls enjoy performing for a variety of reasons.

“My favorite part of performing is the comfort and happiness I feel in stage. It’s pretty much a second home to me,” senior Kate Abbott said.

“My favorite part of performing is being on the stage with some of my closest friends. I’ve made so many friendships throughout the year, and it’s great to share the love of performing with them,” Slania said.

The Janesville competition marks the end of the show choir season, and group members have a lot to reminisce about.

“My favorite memory of the season was performing at Chicagoland Showcase when the gym was packed before awards because a lot of my friends and family were finally able to see the show,” Van Meveran said.

Some enjoyed spending time with their close friends.

“My favorite memory of this season was my final showcase with my best friend, Caitlin,” Abbott said.

Some members’ favorite memories go all the way back to summer. “My favorite memory was retreat and see how excited we all got about the show along with our director,” junior Zoe Romano said.

Others found joy in all the simple pleasures of competitions.

“My favorite memory of the show choir this year was our competition at Naperville. The Naperville competition was very well run, and we were all impressed by their boxes water that they gave us,” Slania said.

Like any activity, the Ladies’ First girls have learned a lot throughout their season. “I’ve learned that it’s ok to put yourself out there and talk to everyone,” Romano said.

Throughout their time this season, they have grown as both people and performers.

“I have learned to really push myself this year. When I wasn’t confident on a certain dance or song, I would ask questions right away. In the past I was would shy away and not say anything. When I cleared up my confusion, I overall felt more confident when performing all of the numbers,” Slania said.

In addition, they’ve strengthened friendships.

“I loved getting close with all the girls because it’s a second family and you’re not gonna find a better group of girls anywhere,” Wozney said.

For the senior members, this competition marked the end of their show choir careers, which made the win very bittersweet.

“Knowing this was my last time performing with Ladies’ First, I felt sad because I knew I’d miss show choir but happy because I knew that I would move on to other things in life that would give me the same feeling,” Abbott said.

For the remaining members, preparation for next year will begin next summer.

“This year I learned that if you don’t do as well as you expected to do the first time, working hard will help you do better in the future,” Van Meveran said.
