Finding a better than average breakfast in the suburbs is surprisingly accessible. The chains are trustworthy and the diners have genuine character.

I’ll begin with Walker Brothers and Egg Harbor. Both appear often in suburbia, but there’s something that sets them apart from that normal nonsense. Both are speedy. Both are crispy and salty and sweet. Egg Harbor is made distinct with its overflowing rooster decor; Walker Bros manages the same with those classic light fixtures. When I want something I know, I turn to these places. They’re dependable. Deliciously dependable (the best kind). If I had to choose, though, my heart lands with Walker Brothers. Why? The potatoes. Normally, I’d pick cubed potatoes over the graded hash browns (offered at Egg Harbor and Walker Brothers, respectively), but for some reason the Bros hash browns are special. My bet’s on the onions.

Next, the diner on a corner that no one seems to know about: TNT’s Snack Shop. I love this place. The interior is retro, stuffed with knick-knacks and stuffed with people. The menu is simple, no nonsense. And grits are essential. The service mirrors the style, comforting but not flashy. The food isn’t gourmet, but it’s not meant to be. See also: pies. This place has pies.

Then there’s Uptown Cafe. The cheaper neighbor to Egg Harbor, it has that grandma style we all know and love. Here, my soul rests with the skillets. There’s something special about them at Uptown: the potatoes are just right and the eggs are lavishly yolk-y.

Finally, for something entirely different and an hour up 294 (food has no borders), I present Apple Holler. We know it as the Wisconsin apple orchard only visitable in fall, but look again! This magnificent orchard, country store, petting zoo, AND restaurant has weekend brunch. That’s right. Weekend brunch. Weekend brunch buffets, to be exact. Three of my favorite words in the whole world. From 8 to 12, there’s apple fritters and french toast and biscuits and scrambled eggs and more! It’s everything that makes the world turn, and it may be my favorite. That’s why it makes the list, even with the hike.
