The DECA team had 29 students qualify for the state competition last weekend.  Of those 29, nine qualified for the national competition by placing top four in their respective categories.

Seniors Abby Johnstone and Martina Schneider qualified in Hospitality and Tourism by placing fourth.  Juniors Meredith Goone and Eliza Lewandowska received third place in Financial Analysis, punching their ticket to nationals.

Seniors Kelly Miller and Shannon Steines became state champions in Hospitality and Tourism.

“Shannon and I work really well together as a team,” Miller said. “Our positivie team dynamic was crucial to winning state and qualifying for nationals.”

Senior Scott Tangney placed fourth in Hotel and Lodging.  Juniors Carter Zagorski and John Datillo came away with a third place finish in Buying and Merchandising.

Senior Evan Johnson received Gold on the Economics test portion of the test.

“Being in AP Econ definitely helped me this year; plus my other three years of experience leading up to this year,” Johnson said.

The national competition will take place April 21-24 in Atlanta, Georgia.

“My goal for nationals is to hopefully advance to the second day of competition and learn more about the various benefits DECA has to offer at the national level,” Miller said.
