The PyeongChang Olympics in South Korea is about to begin. The opening ceremonies are set to begin on Friday followed by more than two weeks of competition in fifteen different events. The opening ceremonies, set to be one of the coldest to date (temperatures in PyeongChang have been dropping to -4 degrees Fahrenheit at night) has made officials worried.

However, many students are excited to watch the games and cheer on Team USA, “I am excited to watch! I like watching ice skating, that one is a good one. I can’t wait to watch [the opening ceremonies] but I heard it is cold there so I hope no one gets sick,” sophomore Morgan Palmer said.

The theme of the opening ceremonies is peace, however some worry that tensions with North Korea could affect the games. Both North and South Korea are competing together under the same flag as a unified team. “I think it is weird that they combined teams [North and South Korea] but other than that I’m not too concerned,” sophomore Olivia Bell said.

In addition, the Paralympic Games start March 9 and end on March 18.

As Team USA starts competing in PyeongChang, the team will have its largest team for a Winter Olympics, 242 athletes will be participating. Many students will be watching the Games carefully to see Team USA succeed.
