The Speech team contributed to A Soldier’s Journey Home efforts by hosting a photo booth at their tournament. Competitors were able to take photos with their teammates for a dollar and also participate in a raffle for gift cards. All the money earned will be donated to Sgt. Eric Morante.

“I really enjoy the photo booth, it’s a great way to get money for troops. It’s a very visible way to show our appreciation for the soldier and have a great time with friends,” senior Evelina Podkowa said.

There were a variety of props that participants could use in their photos. “There’s so many options you can do and so many cute signs you can use,” senior Annie Hermanson said.

The activity encouraged team bonding between speech rounds and created a light atmosphere within a competitive environment. “The atmosphere of the photo booth is goofy and fun. Everyone’s just laughing and having a great time,” Hermanson said.

The photo booth also spread awareness about the cause. Students from schools that don’t participate in these fundraisers got involved as well as students who might be participating in their own schools.

“I think the photo booth is a more personalized way to really connect and let Sgt. Eric Morante see how many individuals there are out there who care about and support him,” senior and speech team captain Lily Buchen said.

At the end of the tournament, during the awards ceremony, the team filmed the auditorium thanking and cheering Morante. The captains plan to compile the photos in a scrapbook to give to Morante at the Holiday Assembly. “The scrapbook is something he can keep and look back on, and I hope it’ll be a reminder to him that he’s not alone,” Buchen said.

In addition to the photo booth, video, and scrap book, the Speech team hosted a raffle, and provided “No Limitations” bricks for students to fill out to add to the wall.
