Junior Kate Zotos is involved in a variety of school activities, but this year she also decided to join the speech team.

“I decided to join speech team because it was always a club I was interesting in because I’m naturally pretty comfortable with public speaking, and this year I had time in my schedule so I decided to join,” Zotos said.

This year, Zotos is competing in the Oratorical Declamation category. The event consists of memorizing a pre-existing speech and then performing and acting it out.

“I chose this event because I’m not a great writer so I thought an event where I don’t need to write my own material would be awesome. Also, I have pretty good memory so I felt like I would be able to memorize the whole eight or nine minutes,” Zotos said.

Zotos chose the TED Talk “To Raise Brave Girls, Encourage Adventure” as her speech.

“It’s about how girls are raised as if they’re more fragile and cant handle as much and this is what normally leads to them growing up more afraid and thinking that they can’t do or say as much as boys. It’s about how more girls need to go on despite their fears,” Zotos said.

She appreciates the meaning of the speech, and that is what drove her to choose it.

“I chose this speech because I think it has a really important message, and there’s something in it for everyone and is really easy to relate to, so it can reach the whole audience,” Zotos said.

Zotos has already had success in speech. She won first place in her event at her first tournament at Wheeling last Saturday.

“It felt amazing to win my first competition because I went into it now knowing what to expect but I did as best as I thought I could and to be recognized for that is amazing,” Zotos said. “Looking at how many people I was up against and the overall score I got made me super happy, and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.”
