Sophomore Josh Methner races in a pack at the start of the race.

Boys cross country continued their post season success at the state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Nov. 4.

As a team, the Huskies took eighth place with 230 points.

The team headed into the meet with high expectations for themselves.

“Going into state, one of our goals we’ve had since the beginning of the season was to be in the top five,” senior Nate Mayo said.

The boys went into the race confident, trying to improve from last year’s state meet.

“We went out really hard because last year we didn’t go out hard enough at the beginning and that put us at a terrible position where we couldn’t work up. This year we put ourselves in a position where we could have a legitimate chance of getting in the top five, top three at state,” Mayo said.

The Huskies were led by sophomore Josh Methner. Methner’s time of 14:36 earned him seventh place and an all-state title.

“We wanted to do well as a team. I knew I could place high, so I wanted to do well there [at state],” Methner said.

He was followed by senior Ryan Theisen (14:58) in 36 place, junior Ryan Buch (15:18) in 75 place, and sophomore Max Svienty (15:21) in 81 place. Mayo (15:33), junior Thomas McCarthy (15:53), and senior Quinn Cunningham (16:07) finished in 116, 161, and 185 places, respectively.

“Across the board, we were doing really great,” Mayo said.

Despite not taking home a trophy like they had hoped, the team still felt good about how they raced.

“The way we ran, we deserved to be in the top five in the state, but it was a really hard state this year,” Mayo said.
