Most everyone has a camera these days. It’s easy to pull out an iPhone and snap a quick photo for Instagram. However, less people take the time to focus on photography and to shoot artsy photos that capture in-depth moments.  Senior Maddy Wachowski focuses on these aspects of photography.

“I fell in love with photography in eighth grade. For our eighth grade field trip at Thomas we went to Taft. There was a competition to see who could take the best photo. I submitted a lucky shot of a woodpecker and it won,” Wachowski said.

Wachowski’s “lucky shot” still hangs up in the hall of her old school.

“Knowing that my work is up on the wall and enjoyed by people just made me fall in love [with photography],” Wachowski said.

Wachowski’s biggest struggle is finding her subject matter, especially under the right conditions.

“A lot of my photos are of nature so I usually take majority of them when we go on trips. I don’t edit my photos a lot I prefer to keep them as natural as possible or do the majority of my ‘editing’ pre-shoot with different lighting and lenses,” Wachoswki said.

Despite her passion, Wachowski is not looking to pursue photography as a career.

“It is a hard business to get into. I am planning on being a commercial airline pilot and selling some of my photos on the side,” Wachowski said.

Wachoswki is currently selling digital copies of her photos through her Instagram account (@wachowski_photo).
