Service Over Self (SOS) held their kickoff meeting yesterday at 7 pm in the Carter Gym. At the meeting, the SOS class and SOS coordinator Mark Gunther introduced students to the purpose of SOS and the many activities within it.

“My friend asked me to go, and I decided to go because I want to get more involved in the school,” freshman Devanjali Patel said.

The SOS class, consisting of seniors, is in charge of planning the SOS events throughout the year.

“I decided to take the SOS class because I love working in the community and working with people with special needs,” senior Anna Koutris said.

The class put in a lot of preparation before the meeting to ensure that students would be well-informed about not only the meeting, but also future SOS events.

“We separated into coordinating groups and made posters, sign up sheets, and information sheets for our specific volunteer activities. We also promoted the meeting by making posters and setting up an SOS Snapchat account,” Koutris said.

Overall, the meeting was excited for students and, they felt encouraged to sign up for various volunteer activities.

“I thought it was really fun. I signed up for SOS Life and Super Buddies,” Patel said.

“Being able to choose what SOS activities to be involved in makes it more fun for students and makes them want to come back,” Koutris said.

This kickoff meeting is only the beginning for SOS, as they have many activities planned throughout the year, including the blood drive, “Funner Olympics,” and Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

“I’m most excited for the big projects, especially the food drive,” Koutris said.

Students can still sign up for SOS projects by talking to Gunther in room 115.
