While some seniors spent the summer starting the Common Application, writing college essays, or touring college campuses, senior Justyna Stukin spent three weeks of her summer at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She took part in the Summer@Brown pre-college program, specifically in the “Neuroscience in Health and Disease” class.

“I decided to do it because I wanted a sneak peek into college life, things like being completely independent and forcing myself to be comfortable in a place where I knew no one. I also thought the class just sounded really interesting,” Stukin said.

Her class consisted of lectures, interactive labs, and anatomy-focused computer modeling. In addition, each student prepared a presentation about neuroscience in the news.

“My presentation was about an article called ‘Probing Psychopathic Brains.’ Basically, I learned that there’s a circuit in the brain that controls logical thoughts and reward-based behavior. In a study, researchers found that in psychopaths, this circuit is overactive, yet underdeveloped. So, they get all of the signals that they want to do something they see as rewarding, but they’re not able to find a logical way to achieve that feeling,” Stukin said.

When she wasn’t taking notes or researching the brain, Stukin was able to take a few breaks from studying and adventure around the East coast.

“On the weekends, we took day trips to Boston and Newport. My favorite thing I did was when I went to the beach with a few of my friends. We wanted to swim, but it was too cold, so we ended up just having a picnic, swinging, and watching the sun set. It was super relaxing after a long week,” Stukin said.

Although she started the program without knowing anyone else at Brown, Stukin was able to not only bond with her fellow classmates, but also learn from them.

“My favorite part was meeting people and hearing their stories. I met people of so many different backgrounds, from different countries, and I got to learn about a lot of cultures,” Stukin said.

Not only did Stukin have both an educational and enjoyable experience at Brown, but she also gained insight into her future.

“Personally, it’s made me realize that neuroscience is what I really like, so it’s made me less anxious about college decisions. It also showed me that leaving home isn’t as intimidating as it seems,” Stukin said.
