Even though the year itself has just begun, students are facing the end to another school year. In this case, the final lap of senior Sarah Harden’s school year is coming around the corner, leaving with many accomplishments and with many experiences. Harden has been on varsity and cross country since her sophomore year. “I started running competitively in sixth grade, but before that, I often ran on my own or with my family. Everyone in my family runs and does cross country and track, so I mainly began to run just so that I could be a part of cross country and track when I started middle school. I then grew to really like the sport and continued with it into high school,” Harden said.

Harden has competed in many track events ranging from the 1600 meter run to the four by 800 meter relay. “My favorite race was the cross country state race this year because it was so much fun to run at state with my team and we placed really well. We got tenth at state,” Harden said.

Throughout her years of running, Harden has created many titles for herself and for her team. Harden said, “My greatest running accomplishment so far was either qualifying for state individually last year in track in the 1600 meter run, qualifying for state in cross country this year, or running one of the top times in Hersey cross country history and getting my name on the record board.”

“I like running because I really like our team at Hersey and it’s fun to see my improvement over time. It’s also fun to run some times and beat your personal records or school record or rival teams. As for my future plans, I hope to run a sub five minute mile this year, break the school record, and make it to state in the mile and four by 800. I also plan on running in college on a cross country and track scholarship,” Harden said. As the finish line gets closer, Harden will continue to sprint through the competition and face the new challenges of college.
