Second period classes collect cans, money, and bag and tag in order to collect food items for the food drive ending on Nov. 18. They also have the option to create a family food basket and with that, give a twenty-five dollar donation.
Officially, there is no competition, but it’s a unspoken truth that there is a competition. This year, the top two competitors were the AP Bio and AP Psych classes.
Tina Athanasopoulos’ second hour AP Psych class won last year and wanted to continue that. “Last year’s 8,511 cans…we had to beat it,” senior Keri Siozios said.
AP Bio came in second and wants to claim victory. Although they came in second place they put an amazing effort in collecting cans. “This year, our competition was with AP Psych but our class really just wanted to help others out,” senior Emily Swiderski said. It’s not just about a competition, in the end it’s about trying to help out families who need it most.
AP Psych came in first just as they wanted to. They collected over 10,000 cans. Their motivation goes so far. “The biggest motivation is thinking about how even one more can is able to help out a family in need and make their holiday that much better.
The more cans we can give, the better,” senior Sam Kerr said. The more cans students bring in helps so much even if it’s only one. Things add up quickly.
The goal as a school was to reach 50,000 cans. This goal was not exceeded but with the help of the whole school we managed to collect more than 42,000 cans.
It’s okay that we didn’t get to the expected goal because that’s not what matters. We give what we can and families are still grateful for whatever we can offer them. Every small and big donation and friendly competition led to many people being fed. In the end, the reason for the food drive is to help others in need. Time and time again, Hersey achieves this. This year, Hersey kept going and helping many people spread positivity and generosity.
